Artists, designers, and students all rely on wooden pencils for drawing and writing. They offer a wide variety of lead grades to choose from—often more than mechanical pencil leads can—and there’s nothing quite like the earthy scent of a freshly sharpened pencil.
Read on to see what wooden pencils we recommend for writing, drawing, and more.
It comes in lead grades from 10H to 12B, so there are plenty of options for drawing and writing. We should note that some lead grades are only available in sets, though.
Hard leads create clean, smudge-resistant lines. You may want to use them for sketches that will be inked later, or technical drawings that require precision. Soft leads, on the other hand, make dark, expressive lines that work well for graphite artwork and writing.
Different regions use different lead grading systems. In this guide, we’ll be following the European system, which uses H for hard leads and B for soft leads. If the lead grade has a number, it represents that pencil’s hardness or softness compared to other lead grades. For example, a 5B lead is darker and softer than a 3B lead, while a 5H lead is lighter and harder than a 3H lead.
HB and F are the most balanced lead grades, with F being a little harder. If you’re in the United States, you’re probably familiar with the #2 pencil, which is the same as HB lead.
Harder lead grades tend to leave behind a “shadow” when erased. That’s because hard lead grades create lighter marks, so you’re more likely to press down on the tip. This creates indents in the paper, and it’s harder for an eraser to pick up graphite in the indents. Softer lead grades, on the other hand, can smear when erased and are more difficult to erase precisely.
H grades tend to have higher feedback and may be unpleasant for some to use. B grades are often smoother, but they may feel uncontrollably slippery on smooth papers.
Left-handed writers should look for pencils that have high smudge resistance. Artists, on the other hand, may want to look for pencils that smear easily so they can blend graphite for shading effects and other techniques.

Every Blackwing Pencil comes with a refillable eraser in its iconic ferrule, but we still recommend using a separate eraser for the best results.

For Japanese characters, Uni recommends sharpening the pencil, then wearing down the point to create a flat surface on one side. This tip shape makes it easier to create the strokes for Japanese characters.
You’ll need a pencil sharpener with a hole wide enough to fit the Magnum Black Star. We recommend the KUM Special Diameter for handheld sharpening, or the Blackwing Desktop Pencil Sharpener if you prefer sharpening at your desk.
If you prefer slightly harder or softer pencils, take a look at the Tombow 2558. It comes in H and B lead grades in addition to HB.
The pencils are named for the Japanese phrase sakura saku (さくらさく), which means “blooming cherry blossom.” It was once used in telegrams sent by some Japanese universities to announce passing grades for entrance exams. Whether you use them to fill out an exam or to write in a journal, you can imagine your own future success!
For our tests, we used an HB pencil from each recommendation. If it wasn’t available, we picked a lead grade as close to HB as possible and noted it in the product name. Keep in mind that harder and softer lead grades will differ in terms of erasability, feedback, and smudge resistance. We created all our tests on 80 gsm Maruman Mnemosyne paper.
Wooden pencils are no-nonsense writing instruments. While artists and writers often swear by mechanical pencils or lead holders, wooden pencils are excellent in their own right. If you’ve overlooked them, we hope you consider adding some wooden pencils to your everyday carry stationery!
